Harajuku style originated with the teens on the streets of the Harajuku shopping district in Tokyo, Japan. Gathering in the shopping district, teens hanging out with friends and showing off their creative, eclectic fashion styles. Here’s a breakdown of the subdivisions and cornerstones of the Harajuku fashion phenomenon.
Lolita kei (kei meaning style) is probably the most recognizable and largest of the Japanese fashion sub-cultures. The style is based on the Victorian era of clothing, specifically children’s fashion. Lolita style is unique in that there is a focus on not showing much skin and being considered sexy.
The modest clothing serves as a statement against society’s sexualized culture. Lolita style places an emphasis on what is cute and elegant and even gothic. Read about it…
Gyaru girls, in a sense, are the direct opposite of Lolita girls. Gyaru are known for being trendy, cool, and leading very glamorous lives. A true Gyaru dedicates a lot of time perfecting and keeping up her appearance and takes pride in it. Because Gyaru fashion is more of a lifestyle than a signature outfit, there are many aspects and sub-styles of Gyaru. Read about them all here
What connects them is the desire and ability to stand out above the norm. One distinct part of Gyaru is the organization of Gal Circles. Circles are a group of Gyaru that meet up to promote and celebrate the Gyaru lifestyle. Gyaru style is one of the more easily accessible (and more affordable)Japanese styles. Gyaru is inspired by Western fashion and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to American Valley Girl (think Clueless or Jersey Shore).

Decora and Kawaii are not about showing off your body, but showing off your cuteness and creativity. Kawaii means “cute” and has become a major aspect of Japanese culture (how many times have you heard that something is “so kawaii!?”). This refers to wearing clothing that appears to be made for young children or clothing that accentuates “cuteness.” The style is characterized by ruffles, pastels, bright colors, and oversized character toys or bags for accessories. Colorblocking can be tricky (although this tutorial on how to colorblock is helpful). But there is an easy way to play with the trend without mixing-and-matching and playing with color theory each time you put an outfit together.
How? Just let the clothes do the work for you. Find pieces that have already done the color blocking so all you have to do is add the finishing pieces and put it all other.
If you caught me walking down the streets of Boston, or Chicago, on any given day, I’d probably be wearing something like this. Those who know me, know this is VERY true. The key, “so Jenn,” defining pieces being the soft flowing shirt, big bag and sunglasses.

In laud of Veteran’s Day, it’s only appropriate to not only thank the soldiers for protecting this great nation but also thanks to designers that saw beauty in military inspired fashion. Without those designers, army green (one of my personal faves) may have fallen by the waste side as a color that clothing would never be. There may not be all those gorgeous, structured, double-breasted jackets. No combat boots, no shirts with precise button detail, or camo. I know it’s hard to imagine, but just like this country, fashion wouldn’t be as chic without the military. Please take the time to honor those in your life that have served to withhold our nation!

Animal print has been seen all over, from celebrities to fashionistas. It’s the touch that spices up any outfit whether it’s cheetah print heels with a sexy LBD or python print pants with a crisp white button-up. It definitely turns head when worn correctly. It can be tricky sometimes, especially when worn with color (think Snooki) but it also can be very chic. The key is usually the pattern itself. Look for prints that resemble the actual animal. When the print looks more sporadic than concise it tends to look cheap, and no one wants that. Also, instead of the usual black or white combo, try brighter colors to liven up the print like jade green, or deep corals.
