Transparent Fashion

There is nothing to hide with these transparent fashion accessories. There seems to be a common theme of see-through or transparency in fashion, echoed in these fabulous finds. These transparent trimmings are all the rage of runways, fashion blogs and, most importantly, the streets. From classy Danish shades to twisted lucite jewelry, despite being clear these finds have the ability to catch any eye.

Footwear is the main outlet for designers to harness transparent fashion. Perhaps it is because a pair of see-through high heels will make any fashionistas feel like they are wearing real-life Cinderella shoes. But many of these designs go beyond feeling like a princess, such as the electrifying highlighter-hued kicks by Fluo Derby that mix transparency with a flash of neon.

And, if you are not willing to spend money on couture fairytale footwear, there are many alternatives for bringing in a see-through look with DIY tutorials teaching fashionistas how to make crystal clear purses.

Editorial: Andressa Fontana Grazia

The Andressa Fontana Grazia Italy editorial is filled with chic city style fit for the sophisticated urban woman. It specifically hones in on studded embellishments that add a lot of edgy pizazz to otherwise simple and safe outfits. Granted, each piece hugs the curves of the model’s svelte figure, making them anything but safe on her.

Shot by photographer Zoltan Tombor, the Andressa Fontana Grazia Italy editorial is appearing in the magazine’s latest issue. The Brazilian beauty pops out against graphically zig-zagging building walls and in empty diners. Styled by Michela Guasco, she has been outfitted in a spring wardrobe featuring the likes of Just Cavalli, Fendi, Marni and Versace. Fontana’s looks have been finished with metallic makeup by Cyntia Sobek and sheared hair by Shalom Sharon.

Is Adidas Setting “Us” B(l)ack?

picture via The Fashion Bomb

I’ve always admired Adidas‘ creativity. Especially the one it takes with its Originals Collection. Whether it is the shoe that “give you wings” with its Jeremy Scott collection or a recent collab with Opening Ceremony, I usually pick Adidas first in certain categories. That’s why I was very disheartened when I saw the new JS (Jeremy Scott) Roundhouse shoes featuring orange shackles. Though, I’m sure, Adidas and Jeremy Scott never imagined that their wild and spunky creativity would be taken out of context, indeed it has. The Facebook post garnered 2,823 comments to date with many mixed emotions.

So, what do you think? Are these shoes painful reminders of slavery/prison, or are they simply just pushing the boundaries of fashion and worth the $350 price tag come August?

Also, do you think that African Americans are too sensitive when it comes to issues that can be perceived remotely close to anything racist?

Signed, DeShara

4am: Fiona Apple- "Every Single Night"

In some of the lyrics to the “new track,” as Fiona Apple so derisively referred to “Every Single Night,” in our recent interview with the singer-songwriter, she soulfully yowls, “Every single night’s a fight with my brain.” Now she is showing us just what those lyrics mean with an surrealistic new video for the song, helmed by quirky director Joseph Cahill. Considering Apple has titled her new album When the Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Chords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (which you can stream at NPR right now), and the fact that Cahill’s Vimeo bio boasts of his recent short film about “fear and crêpes,” their pairing sounds like a fantastical match made in heaven.

The imagery in the Apple video is dreamlike and vivid, as she sings with a squid on her head, lies down next to a man wearing a goat’s head mask, floats on marionette strings over an alligator, ignores a giant snail headed toward the Eiffel Tower, cleans a floor with a toy hula girl and much, much more. As with her past videos like “Criminal” and “O’ Sailor,” Apple remains wide-eyed and passive as the world goes crazy around her, and that just makes the whole thing all the more unsettling.

So, without further ado, the fight inside Fiona’s brain, thanks to Sundance Channel:

H&M’s newest collaboration? Maison Martin Margiela

h&m maison martin margielaFor all my fashionistas ballin on a budget (guys, this includes you too) you should get really hype for this….Maison Martin Margiela is coming to H&M! The collection will be released on November 15th in select stores across the world, offering clothes and accessories for both men and women.

The French fashion house, created in 1988, was founded by Martin Margiela, a Belgian designer who is often labeled as the seventh member of the original avant-garde group of designers called Antwerp Six. The house follows its own path, toying with fashion norms and using deconstruction and transformation to create new staples. The further you step away from the conventional fashion framework, the closer you come to understanding what the brand is all about.

“Maison Martin Margiela is one of the most important and influential fashion houses of the past three decades. I am so excited by this radical collaboration which will give fashion lovers around the world the chance to wear special pieces by Maison Martin Margiela. This collaboration will be a great and memorable fashion moment,” says Margareta van den Bosch of H&M

Regarding the collaboration, Margiela issued this statement:

“The democracy of our fashion has always been at the center of our creativity, and the collaboration with H&M allows us to push this instinct further. We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise all.”

What do you think of the collaboration? Let us know!

Sabine Ducasse Spring/Summer 2012

The Sabine Ducasse ‘Melting Pot’ Collection is an extremely confident clothing combination. The Shanghai-based designer Sabine Ducasse created this incredible collection for Spring/Summer 2012. The kaleidoscopic patterns are made into armor-silhouetted clothing pieces perfect for the funky fashion warrior.

Using fashionable over-the-top sleeves, Ducasse makes bold statement pieces. In the photograph that shows off the expansive wingspan of the armor, you can truly examine the detail of the pieces.

The clothing is then complimented with equally adventurous accessories. Ducasse’s colorful headpieces and glasses are created using bright beading and would make for a fun DIY project for the willing and skilled.

Though the pieces are quirky, the multi-colored collection will definitely stand out in the crowd.
