Alfred Hitchcock on Happiness

“…only things that are creative and not destructive… hatred is wasted energy.”

The secret of happiness and purpose endures as our highest aspiration. From its science and psychologyto its geography to its empirical application, we go after it with ceaseless zeal.

In this brilliantly wise and articulate short excerpt from an archival interview, the great Alfred Hitchcock shares his definition of happiness — a definition that makes my own heart sing, and harks back to this morning’s meditation on kindness and the lack thereof.

“A clear horizon — nothing to worry about on your plate, only things that are creative and not destructive… I can’t bear quarreling, I can’t bear feelings between people — I think hatred is wasted energy, and it’s all non-productive. I’m very sensitive — a sharp word, said by a person, say, who has a temper, if they’re close for me, hurts me for days. I know we’re only human, we do go in for these various emotions, call them negative emotions, but when all these are removed and you can look forward and the road is clear ahead, and now you’re going to create something — I think that’s as happy as I’ll ever want to be.”

First Point by Richard Phillips featuring Lindsay Lohan

Having last appeared in a big-screen Hollywood production as a part of Robert Rodriguez’s Machete in 2010, Lindsay Lohan is set to appear in an artsy short film later this year. Cast by Richard Phillips in a follow-up to their 90-second collaborative piece Lindsay Lohan (2011), the new film First Point is once again co-directed by legendary surf filmmaker Taylor Steele and sees the actress on the beach and in the water at various points of the day and night. Meant to exude the power still possessed by Lohan, First Point will see an official premiere at Art Unlimited as a part of Art Basel 2012 in Miami.

Janie Taylor for Chloé: The Prima Ballerina Models the Fashion House’s Ethereal Collection

New York City Ballet principal Janie Taylor road tests Chloé’s dance-inspired spring/summer 2011 collection with choreographer and corps de ballet member Justin Peck in today’s short by director Bon Duke. Set to Philip Glass’s “String Quartet No. 3, ‘Mishima’: IV. 1962: Body Building,” the impassioned routine was conceived by Peck in a bid to capture the multidimensional aspects of the performance on camera. “You always see ballet from the front,” he says. “Here was an opportunity to show it from the side, from the back, from every angle, and create a really unique viewing experience.”

Antiqued Star Wars Illustrations

Designer and illustrator Nick Agin worked on a personal project, exploring the iconic Star Wars film characters. The outcome is a great series of illustrations, inspired by the style that old American presidents were drawn in. Included in the line-up are of course Vader, Yoda, 3-CPO and the Stormtrooper next to a few others.
